I’m a year out from buying a truck, but I want to go check out a ranger, just to find out if it’s worth saving up for one. They’ll probably look at me like I’m some kind of schmuck with my Fiesta and saying “I’m not planning on buying for a year”, but hey, it’s worth a shot?

If there is an inkling of a chance, they probably will toss you the keys within a few minutes. It’s a Ranger, not a Bullitt .

I’ve driven one. The drivetrain is the best in the segment, by a margin - torque is lovely. The interior is decent, I’m always left wanting for more supportive (bolstered) seats but that’s biased from my current cars. The price is a bit high still, even with incentives and I still don’t like how ass-high they sit, especially compared to any manufacturer press images and the configurator. The GM twins hav this issue too, their drivetrain is alright, interior is ok, pricing is decent right now with the model year end pricing. The Taco looks the best, I like the lower bed height a lot but hate the drivetrain (slow, garbage auto), the lack of seat adjustability (improving for 2020, apparently) and the price you pay for its Toyota-ness. The F rontier is from 2004 and feels like it, ‘nuff said.
If I can make pricing more appealing on a Ranger I might still buy one, if I can get a really good deal on a GM I could be swayed to a Canyon. If neither of those pan out I’ll keep driving the WRX for probably another year.

I figured that assessment would be approximately the assessment. The price on the Ranger is coming down slowly, and I wonder if I can get a few more discounts on it.
I liked the Colorado, but part of me would always wonder about missing out on the ZR2.
The Taco is so stupid expensive.
The Frontier exists.

I haven’t driven one but I wish the ZR2 was a bit less ordinary in the drivetrain and interior departments. Maybe a higher-strung version of the V6, 2.7 turbo 4 from the Silverado, 2.0 turbo from the Camaro (et al), or a 5.3 v8 (one can dream) and a good set of bolstered seats and I’d seriously consider it.
Likewise, if Ford sold the Ranger Raptor here (maybe with the 2.7EB, as they wouldn’t bring the TT diesel and I wouldn’t want it anyway) I’d probably buy one.

M’lady was yesterday given the option of either a previous generation RAV4 or a current Ford Ranger 4x4 3.2 TDi from the work fleet...both automatics...to drive four hours northeast to take up bushfire planning duties for a few days.
She hates the RAV4 (tinny little shitbox are her words). But she hates the Ranger even more - likes the way it drives but everything else is ‘just fucking awful’.
Everytime I mention a Ranger or its Everest sister as a new vehicle option, the look of disdain would kill a weaker man.
She took the RAV4.
